Problem
Most habit trackers and break reminders fail the same way: they ask for too much attention. Streaks that shame you for missing a day, and reminders that interrupt you mid-call. I wanted two small tools that stay out of the way.
Habitly
A habit tracker for iOS and Android. Open it, tap what you've done, leave.
Consistency, not streaks. The headline number is how reliably you've kept a habit over time, so missing one day doesn't feel like it erased months of work. That required being precise about what counts as a missed opportunity:
- a fixed-schedule habit is judged per scheduled day
- a flexible "three times a week" habit is judged per week, and doing it five times doesn't score above 100%
- days before a habit existed, or after it was archived, don't count at all
All of that lives in one pure analytics module, with no UI and no storage, so it's easy to test.
Two tabs, because the app has two jobs. An early version had a third "Habits" tab. Its only unique job was reordering, and everything else it showed was a thinner copy of Progress. So it went.
DeskStretch
A macOS menu bar app that reminds you to stretch, built in SwiftUI and AppKit.
Know when not to interrupt. The scheduler reads a few system signals before it acts:
- time since the last keyboard or mouse input, so time away from the desk counts as a break and resets the timer
- whether any app is using the microphone, which is a good sign you're on a call
- how close the next break is, so small nudges never crowd a full break
Warn before you break. A small heads-up appears first, with snooze, skip and start-now. The break screen itself uses a blurred copy of your own wallpaper, so it feels like part of the desk rather than an alarm.
Outcome
Both are in progress. Habitly is feature-complete and in testing. DeskStretch has a marketing site built and is heading to launch.
